Amanda Bynes‘ pet Pomeranian almost ended up a casualty of the Monday night mayhem that ended with the actress’ forced hospitalization.

The oddball thespian waltzed into a California liquor store close to the time she allegedly lit a makeshift fire in a stranger’s nearby driveway. Bynes reeked of gasoline as she tried to rinse her poor pooch in a back-office sink, a clerk at the store told the Daily News.

“She was trying to wash the dog. She didn’t ask permission to go in the back on her own,” Southwest Market & Deli employee Tony Darghali told the Daily News.

Darghali was not on duty at the time but heard about the two-minute incident from his co-workers.

“When (the clerk on duty) went back there to see what she was doing, he could smell gasoline. She seemed freaked out and just kind of walked out. I don’t think there was a whole lot of communication,” he said. “It looks like the poor girl needs some help.”

Surveillance footage obtained by the gossip website TMZ.com shows Bynes, 27, wearing a long blond wig as she paces around the store with the tiny dog in her arms and makes a bee line through an employees-only door next to the cash register.

If the time stamp on the video is correct, Bynes made the pup-related pit stop one minute after police received a 911 call about a small plastic gas canister on fire in an elderly woman’s empty driveway a block away. But it is possible she went in beforehand.

The driveway is around the corner from the home of Bynes’ parents.

A witness reported pulling his vehicle over to help with the fire and encountering Bynes at the scene before firefighters arrived.

Andrew Liverpool told E! News that Bynes’ pants were ablaze when he offered assistance at the bizarre scene in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

He said she was lying down in the driveway, rolling around to put out the fire on the leg of her loose black pants. When the fire was out, she rushed over to her dog, he said.

She was “kind of frantic and discombobulated,” he recalled.

He said moments after he moved the gas can to the middle of the driveway for safety, he looked up and noticed the “Hairspray” actress had vanished.

Liverpool said he rushed down the street and located Bynes a block away about to hop in a taxi cab.

He told the driver, “Don’t let her in. There’s a fire,” he recalled to E!

“She got in and (the driver) just took off. Squad cars chased after her, and I don’t know what happened next,” he said.

A large squirt gun also was found at the scene, a fire official told The News.

Liverpool said he saw a “super soaker” in the driveway but didn’t know whether Bynes brought it or someone else used it to douse the flames.

Capt. Don Aguilar with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Bynes was “detained and taken for a mental health evaluation,” and that there’s no criminal investigation “at this time.”

“It’s sad,” Bonnie Braaten, the woman who owns the burned driveway, told The News. “I’m glad no one was hurt and it didn’t spread to my house and my neighbor’s house. It could have been really bad.”

Bynes’ parents declined to comment to The News Tuesday but were photographed leaving a hospital.

Unidentified sources told TMZ.com that Bynes is exhibiting signs of schizophrenia and that her parents plan to seek a court ordered conservatorship.
