New York Methodist Hospital
Ethan Hawke and his daughter Maya paid a surprise visit to patients at New York Methodist Hospital yesterday afternoon. Sonya Clarke, pictured, was thrilled by the visit from Ethan and Maya.
Actor Ethan Hawke and his daughter Maya surprised several New York Methodist Hospital patients with Christmas duets to bring holiday cheer Monday afternoon.
Sonya Clarke, 39, of Brooklyn, spoke with the Daily News about how the “Before Midnight” star, 43, lifted her spirits while she endured chemo.
“It was nice to see that he came out when he didn’t have to,” she said. “I was feeling a little down. It made my day.”
Clarke thinks many famous people only visit hospitals for publicity stunts to make more people like them — but not Hawke.
“He did it on his own, just him and his daughter, to spread some love,” said Clarke.
Clarke, a real estate agent, has been fighting mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma for about a month. She was discharged from the hospital so she could spend Christmas with her family, especially her 10-year-old daughter.
But Clarke will need to go back to continue chemo every three weeks for the foreseeable future.
“When you’re in the hospital you feel depressed because you are not with your family,” she said. “Situations like this make you see what’s important and who is important. I’m just glad I’m back home so I can get some healing.”
Clarke said she will always remember the visit because of 15-year-old Maya’s incredibly “soothing voice.”
“I was just so mesmerized by his daughter’s voice. She’s young. I was thinking she should be on ‘The Voice.'”
